Over 40,000 people are internally and externally displaced from their homes in the Northwest and Southwest Provinces of la République du Cameroun following a military crackdown on non-violent protests. The Northwest and Southwest Provinces of la République du Cameroun, together, are what were once the United Nations Trust Territory of Southern Cameroons. The people of the Northwest and Southwest Provinces launched protests in October 2016, asking the government to address gross marginalization of their people. After half-hearted negotiations by the government, in January 2017, it embarked on mass arrests to intimidate the people and stop the protests. Following the symbolic celebration of independence of our people, now recognizing ourselves as Southern Cameroonians, the goverment carried out a military campaign in which hundreds were killed, thousands were wounded and tens of thousands were displaced, with the majority of the people fleeing to neighboring Nigeria, where they now live as refugees.
